The transition of Malaysian football from the amateur era to semi-professionalism witnessed Selangor experiencing alternating moments of joy and sorrow. The migration of Chin Ann to Melaka, the early retirements of Reduan and Santokh in 1985, Mokhtar’s untimely death due to a mysterious illness in 1988, followed by Arumugam’s road accident in the same year, saw Selangor secure only one Malaysian Cup championship. Despite clinching two Division One Semi-Pro League titles in the inaugural editions of 1989 and 1990, as well as the FA Cup in 1991, Selangor faced a setback and was relegated to Division Two in the 1992 season. However, the decade concluded on a high note as Selangor bid farewell to the historic Merdeka Stadium and established Shah Alam Stadium as their primary arena.
